Jan Leverman trained as a window dresser after school and sang in an amateur band whose music was influenced by the beat and the early 1960s. His unit Gloria was successful with Dutch hits. However, this was too boring for him and he began to write his own lyrics. Leverman called himself from then on because of his body length of 1.92 m Robert Long and had his first successes as a singer-songwriter in the early 1970s. He released his first long-playing record in the Netherlands in 1974. His success in Germany began in 1981 with his second German-language LP Homo Sapiens . Michael Kunze translated his Dutch texts into German. In addition to the lyrics, Long also wrote the music himself and worked with the successful composer and arranger Erik van der Wurff .
Robert Long was open about his homosexuality from the start of his career . His texts are largely autobiographically inspired. He had his greatest successes in Germany at the beginning of the 1980s with songs like Feste Jungs , If you would ask me and Tolerant . Feste Jungs was also recorded by Katja Ebstein for her album He du da . He also sang the theme song for the TV series Q & Q and the Dutch theme song for the children's series Gummibärenbande .
Robert Long died of cancer in 2006 after it had been announced only a few days earlier that he would not have much longer to live .
