Robert Marshall Utley (born October 31, 1929 in Arkansas ) is an American historian of the American West .

Utley grew up in Indiana and studied at Purdue University and Indiana University with a master's degree in 1952. As early as the 1940s, he worked at Little Bighorn in Montana for the National Park Service and from 1952 did four years of military service in the US Army , where he was an infantry officer half the time and two years as a historian at the Pentagon . After that he worked again for the National Park Service. First he was regional historian for the southwestern USA in Santa Fe and from 1964 to 1972 chief historian of the National Park Service in Washington, DC 1972/73 he was director of the Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation there and from 1973 to 1976 Assistant Director for Park Historic Preservation . From 1977 to 1980 he was the deputy director of the US President's Advisory Board on Historic Monuments. In 1980 he left the National Park Service and devoted himself to writing books. He has published on George Armstrong Custer , Billy the Kid , Geronimo , the Texas Rangers , Sitting Bull , American Pioneers, and the Indian Wars.

In 1997 Utley received the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize . He was one of the founders of the Western History Association and its president in 1967/68. He was Associate Editor of American West Magazine and the Western Historical Quarterly . He holds honorary degrees from Purdue University, the University of New Mexico, and Indiana University. In 1971 he received the Department of the Interior's Distinguished Service Award . His book Geronimo received the 2013 Spur Award from the Western Writers of America Association in the Best Western Nonfiction Biography category .

He has been married to Melody Webb, also former historians with the National Park Service, since 1980.
