Robert Percy Douglas

Sir Robert Percy Douglas, 4th Baronet (born August 29, 1805 in High Wycombe , Buckinghamshire , † September 30, 1891 in Bournemouth , Hampshire ) was a British nobleman , general and colonial governor.

Life

He was the fourth-born son of Major-General Sir Howard Douglas, 3rd Baronet (1776-1861) from his marriage to Anne Dundas († 1854). He belonged to a branch line of the Scottish clan Douglas . When his father died on November 9, 1861, his three older brothers had already died childless, which is why he inherited the title of Baronet , created in 1777 , of Carr in the County of Perth .

He attended the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe and entered the British Army in 1819 and served as an officer in the 98th Regiment of Foot's Second Battalion . This regiment fought in the First Opium War (1839-1842) and in the Second Sikh War (1848-1849). He went through various ranks , in 1860 he was promoted to the rank of major-general and by 1863 he was lieutenant-general .

From 1860 to 1863 he held the office of Lieutenant Governor ( lieutenant governor ) of Jersey held. During this time the three-masted merchant ship Percy Douglas (781 GRT , launched August 8, 1861) was named after him. In 1991 a £ 1 coin was minted depicting this ship.

From 1863 to 1868 he was Lieutenant Governor of the Cape Colony . While promoting the development and settlement of the colony, the city of Douglas founded at that time is named after him.

On July 1, 1864, he became Colonel in the 98th Regiment of Foot . He kept this post when his regiment was merged with the 64th Regiment of Foot to form the North Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's) in 1881 as part of the reforms of Hugh Childers . He was finally promoted to general on April 14, 1874.

Marriages and offspring

His first marriage was in 1840 with Anne Duckworth. He had five children with her:

  • Sir Arthur Percy Douglas, 5th Baronet (1845-1913);
  • Ann Penelope Harriet Douglas (* around 1851) ⚭ Sir Hugh Low;
  • Helen Mary Douglas (* around 1853).

In 1856 he married Louisa Lang in his second marriage. He had six children with her:

  • Mary Louisa Douglas († 1869);
  • Sir James Stewart Douglas, 6th Baronet (1859–1940) ⚭ Ada Constance Fisher;
  • Jessie Campbell Douglas (around 1861–1946) ⚭ Berkeley Portman;
  • Rose Ella Douglas (* around 1862);
  • Emma Hope Douglas (* around 1864);
  • Margaret Augusta Douglas (around 1866–1924) ⚭ Reverend James Arthur Hervey.

When he died at his The Hurst estate in Bournemouth in 1891 , his son Arthur inherited.
