Robert Perloff (* 3. February 1921 in Philadelphia ; † 15. April 2013 in Pittsburgh ) was an American professor of Business Administration (Business Administration) and psychology .

Life

Robert Perloff grew up in Philadelphia and fought in the Philippines during World War II . Upon his return, he graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1949 and received his PhD in psychology from Ohio State University . He later taught industrial and consumer psychology at Purdue University .

Since 1969 he has spent most of his career as Professor of Business Administration and Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh's Katz Graduate School of Business .

Robert Perloff's academic interests were organizational sciences, program evaluation, consumer behavior and general psychology .

Among other things, he was President of the Association for Consumer Research and the American Psychological Association (1985–1986). His 1985 address as APA President was reprinted in the American Psychologist (vol. 42, 1987) and named one of the 50 classic articles of the past 50 years. Perloff said among other things:

"We should get rid of the misconception that honesty of conviction, the existence of incited troublemakers, whistleblowers, or whatever, is only possible if you are in defiance. In reality, these are the hallmarks of honest people ... You can express your beliefs loud and clear even if you swim with the crowd. "

Perloff was among the 52 co-signers of Mainstream Science on Intelligence , written by Linda Gottfredson and published in December 1994 by the Wall Street Journal .

In 1996 he was part of a task force that investigated controversial issues related to race and intelligence and published the report "Intelligence, Knowns and Unknowns". Perloff has on several occasions vigorously advocated a revision of the current peer review process.

In 2000, Perloff received the American Psychological Foundation's Gold Medal Award for Lifetime Achievement in Psychology in the Public Interest . At the award, Perloff was recognized for his "love of social justice" and his lifelong struggle for "the rights and dignity of women, minorities and homosexuals". He is one of the seventeen psychologists featured by Robert Sternberg in his book Psychologists Defying the Crowd .

Robert Perloff vigorously defended the legitimacy of conversion therapy for homosexuals . At the 2001 APA annual conference, he condemned what he saw as the one-sided political agenda of the APA and said with regard to conversion therapies for homosexuals:

"It's considered unethical ... That's totally wrong. First, we don't have all of the research. Second, if the client wants a change, listen to the client. Third, you're blocking the research."

He took a similar position at the 2004 NARTH Conference.

Perloff has published over 400 publications, reviews, comments and presentations at universities and at conferences.
