Robert Pilger (botanist)

Robert Knud Friedrich Pilger (born July 3, 1876 on Heligoland , † January 9, 1953 in Berlin ) was a German botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is “ Pilg. ".

Life

Pilger, son of the pharmacist Friedrich Wilhelm Robert Pilger (1841–1915), was first assistant, then curator, later professor and director of the Botanical Garden in Berlin, succeeding Friedrich Ludwig Emil Diels . He headed it after the Second World War from 1945 to 1950. He also undertook a collecting and research trip to the Mato Grosso area in Brazil, dealing intensively with the systematics and morphology of sweet grasses, plantains, cycads, conifers and marine algae. The plant genera Pilgerochloa Eig from the sweet grass family (Poaceae), Pilgerina Z.S. Rogers , Nickrent & Malécot from the sandalwood family (Santalaceae) and Pilgerodendron Florin from the cypress family (Cupressaceae) have been named in his honor. Also the algae genus Pilgeria Schmidle and the mushroom genus Pilgeriella Henn. have been named after him.
