Robert Quary or Quarry (* around 1644 in England ; † October 1712 in what would later become the US state of Virginia ) was an English or British colonial official and governor of the Province of Carolina .

Remarks

The spelling of his name varies from Quary to Quarry depending on the source . Nothing is known about his youth and school education. He lived in the Province of Carolina in the 1680s, where he held several offices and was appointed new colonial governor in July 1685 to succeed Joseph West . However, he only held this office until October of the same year because he was suspected of being in league with pirates. For this reason, he lost all other offices that he held in the colony at that time by February 1688. In 1692 he fled to Philadelphia after a failed attempt at a political comeback . Four years later he was appointed Judge of the Admiralty, where he was responsible for all English colonies from Pennsylvania south to Georgia . At the beginning of the 18th century he became the head of the customs authorities (Surveyor General of the Customs) for the colonies of Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Maryland. Robert Quary died in Virginia in October 1712.
