Robert R. Shrock

Robert Rakes Shrock (born August 27, 1904 in Wawpecong , Miami County , Indiana , † June 22, 1993 ) was an American paleontologist and geologist .

Life

Shrock studied at Indiana University , where he also received his doctorate, and then went to the University of Wisconsin , where he was a colleague of William H. Twenhofel , and from 1937 as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he was in 1975 retired. From 1949 to 1965 he was there at the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics. During this time, the geosciences building was inaugurated in 1965, and he started an oceanography program at MIT with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (which named a research vessel after him).

In addition to paleontology, he dealt with sedimentology . 1956/57 he was president of the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM). He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1954). In retirement he wrote two books on the history of geology.

In 1976 he received the William H. Twenhofel Medal . Three fossils are named after him. In 1971 he received an honorary doctorate from Indiana University.
