Life

Robert Schiess was born in Cham, Schulhausstrasse 14 in 1896. He learned painting in Altdorf . After completing his training, he first worked in Lausanne . In order to refine his arts, Schiess went on a study trip to Italy around 1920. After a few lean artist years, Robert Schiess joined the Pontifical Swiss Guard from 1923 to 1927 . The service in the Vatican enabled Schiess to continue his education. Having noticed his talent, he was introduced to the circle around the famous painter Philip Alexius de László on the recommendation of Messrs. Von Schulthess . Schiess traveled all over the world with him in 1928. Stations of the trips were u. a. America , Africa , Spain , France and again Italy. He was deeply impressed by the Egyptian court, where both artists stayed for a long time.

In 1933 Schiess returned to Italy and resumed his service in the Swiss Guard until 1951. During this time he was very productive and not only painted for the Vatican, but also made many commissioned pictures for wealthy citizens. In addition to portraits, Schiess painted landscapes . But he was particularly fond of making copies of old masters . Here he perfected his art and was able to show his skills. This earned Schiess great recognition and the Vatican again commissioned him to make portraits of all the colonels of the Swiss Guard. From 1952 Schiess lived on Ischia, first with friends, later forever. He was fascinated by the light and shadow of this charming island. He married in Ischia in 1955, but fell ill shortly afterwards and died in 1956 at the age of 60.
