Robert David Schreiber (born April 25, 1946 in Rochester , New York ) is an American immunologist who has made a particular contribution to tumor immunology .

Schreiber earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1968 and a Ph.D. in 1973 there. in biochemistry . As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla , California , where he initially remained as a research assistant. Since 1985 he has served on the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis . Here he is (as of 2017) AM Bursky & JM Bursky Distinguished Professor, Pathology and Immunology . He also holds a professorship for molecular microbiology thereand is director of the Center for Human Immunology and Immunotherapy Programs .

At the beginning of his career, Schreiber mainly dealt with signal transmission in the immune system by cytokines , in particular with the role of interferon-γ . From this his interest in the interaction of the immune system with cancer cells developed . He developed the model of cancer immunoediting , which states that the immune system can eliminate cancer cells, but can also put them into a state of "hibernation", which under certain conditions can even increase the degree of malignancy of the disease by causing the tumor cells to become selected those who are most likely to survive in an immunocompetent individual ( Immunescape ). He developed concepts for the identification of neoantigens that are promising for a possible cancer vaccination .

Schreiber has (as of July 2018) an h-index of 123.

He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1996, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010 , and the National Academy of Sciences in 2013 .

He received the William B. Coley Award of the Cancer Research Institute in 2001 , the Charles Rodolphe Brupbacher Foundation Prize in 2007 and, together with James P. Allison, the Balzan Prize of the International Balzan Foundation in 2017 .
