Robert Schweichel

Georg Julius Robert Schweichel (pseudonym Heinrich Friedemann ; * July 12, 1821 in Königsberg , † April 25, 1907 in Berlin ) was a journalist and writer who sympathized with the Social Democrats .

Live and act

While studying law and camera science at the Königsberg Albertina , he became a member of the Germania fraternity in 1844 . After completing his studies, Schweichel appeared in 1848 as a speaker in the workers' association, wrote sharp articles for the representatives of the people and headed the editorship of the Ostpreussisches Volksblatt and Dorfzeitung für Prussia (1849-1850).

He was expelled from Prussia in 1855 because of a press offense (participation in the movements of 1848 and 1849 ). He emigrated to Switzerland and settled in Lausanne , where he taught at the college and was professor at the academy. When he returned to Germany in 1861, he was able to take over the editing of the Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung in Berlin . From 1869 to 1883 he edited the Jankesche Deutsche Roman-Zeitung . For a time he was President of the German Writers' Association.

He then lived as a writer in Leipzig, Hanover and Berlin. He was a close friend of Wilhelm Liebknecht and August Bebel . He wrote u. a. for the Demokratisches Wochenblatt , the Neue Zeit and other socialist newspapers.

Schweichel's wife was the writer and social democrat Elise Schweichel , née Langer (1831–1912).

From 1897 to 1903 it appeared in the weekly magazine In free hours, founded in 1897 . Novels and stories for the working people twelve stories by Robert Schweichel, mostly reprints, under the collective title From the Lives of the Disenfranchised , which both Robert and Elise Schweichel were very happy about. In December 1898, Schweichel's main work was published under the title Um die Freiheit. Historical novel from the German Peasants' War in 1515. It was to remain the only one of his works that was later reprinted again and again.

At the funeral service for Robert Schweichel on April 28, 1907, August Bebel gave his friend the memorial speech in the hall of the community cemetery Friedhof Berlin-Schöneberg, and songs performed by the Schöneberg Workers' Choral Society framed the funeral service when the coffin was lowered.
