Robert Sommer (historian)

Robert Sommer (born June 17, 1974 in Cottbus ) is a German cultural scientist and historian . His research focus is on the investigation of camp brothels and sexual forced labor in Nazi concentration camps. The doctoral thesis was published under the title Das KZ-Bordell: Sexual Forced Labor in National Socialist Concentration Camps and for the first time provided a comprehensive scientific overview of the topic.

He has been married to the politician Evrim Sommer since 2009 , has a daughter and lives in Berlin .

Life

Studies and PhD

After graduating from high school , Robert Sommer studied political science , cultural studies and American studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Florence . After completing his studies , he did his doctorate in 2009 at the Institute for Cultural Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin on the subject of camp brothels in National Socialist concentration camps .

Scientific activity

He has been a freelance scientist and author since 2009. He is a freelancer at the Ravensbrück Memorial and also works for the Humboldt University in Berlin , the Hampshire College in Amherst (Massachusetts) and DePaul University . As a scientific advisor, he worked on various documentaries, such as the BBC documentary Auschwitz: The Nazis and 'The Final Solution' or These cursed hours in the evening. His other research interests include: sexual violence in war, prostitution in the Third Reich, the history of the concentration camps, and the persecution of “anti-socials” under National Socialism. He coined the term “sexual forced labor” and called for the female victims of the concentration camp brothels to be recognized. The Auschwitz survivor Ruth Klüger paid tribute to him in her commemorative speech on January 27, 2016 in front of the German Bundestag as part of the commemorative hour on the day of commemoration of the victims of National Socialism .
