Origin and family

Helin Evrim Sommer was born in the small town of Varto in Eastern Anatolia . Her family is of Kurdish - Alevi origin. She was not allowed to use her first name Hêlîn due to the ban on Kurdish names in Turkey. Her father, Kazim Baba, was the founder of the first socialist teachers' union "TÖP-DER" in Turkey. As a left and Kurdish politician, he was persecuted by the Turkish military regime, sentenced to 15 years in prison and imprisoned in the military prison in Diyarbakir from 1971 to 1973 . He was released through a general amnesty for political prisoners , but was on the regime's death list after the 1980 military coup . The Baba family fled Turkey to West Berlin .

Evrim Baba grew up in the West Berlin district of Schöneberg . She has lived in the Lichtenberg district since 2006 . In 2009 she married the historian Robert Sommer and took his last name. She has been using her Kurdish first name Helin since 2012. She is the mother of one child.

In 1997 Baba became a member of the PDS . From 1999 to 2006 she was chairwoman of the PDS district association in Berlin-Neukölln . From 1999 to 2016, Sommer was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives and for the PDS parliamentary group and, from 2006, Die Linke in the House of Representatives, spokeswoman for women's and development policy. Since 2006 she has been a directly elected member of the Lichtenberg 1 constituency in the Berlin House of Representatives. Most recently she was a member of the Committees Committee on Labor, Integration, Vocational Training, Women , Economy, Research and Technology and in the Presidium of the House of Representatives.

Sommer was deputy chairwoman from 2007 to 2012 and chairwoman of the district association of the party Die Linke in Lichtenberg from 2012 to November 2016 .

When she was elected to the Berlin House of Representatives in 2016 , Sommer no longer ran in her constituency, but ran as the top candidate for the District Assembly (BVV) Lichtenberg. The Left was the strongest party in the district with 29.8%. Sommer was nominated for the office of district mayor by the BVV parliamentary group of the Left . However, it did not achieve the required majority in two ballots.

During the ballot, a report by the RBB suggested that she had given an academic degree that had not yet been awarded. Reference was made to the handbook of the House of Representatives from May 2015, in which she described herself as a historian and would have stated in her résumé “Study of history and gender studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin and Bachelor of Arts (BA)”, although the studies had not yet been completed. She only got this one day before the election of the district mayor. A little later, the Humboldt University announced that the abbreviation BA would denote a course of study and a Bachelor of Arts degree. The term historian is also not protected, as confirmed by the Association of Historians.

Sommer withdrew her candidacy for another ballot and gave up her position as chairwoman of the Left in Lichtenberg. In a press release, she said that she believed her information was correct. She alleged that her own party friends had let her down. She said she had underestimated that part of the party was unwilling to tread new and unconventional paths in the interests of the district. “The distrust shown in me by parts of my own group, anonymous no votes from my own group and the otherwise party-damaging behavior of parts of the group towards the Berlin media show me that a trusting cooperation with my group and parts of my party is no longer possible . "

Sommer was charged with any title abuse. The Berlin public prosecutor's office closed the investigation because there was no “sufficient suspicion” and completely cleared up the allegation. According to her, Bachelor of Arts was not just a degree, but a course that summer had taken. The broadcaster RBB later admitted this.

Since February 2017, Sommer has been working as a research assistant for the Die Linke parliamentary group in the Thuringian state parliament for the Commission of Inquiry "Confrontation with racism, group-related enmity and discrimination in Thuringia".

The Assembly of Representatives of the Berlin Left elected Sommer on April 1, 2017 to place 5 on the state list of the Berlin Left for the 2017 Bundestag election , thereby moving into the Bundestag as the holder of a compensation mandate. For Die Linke she looks after the constituency of Berlin-Spandau - Charlottenburg North . Sommer is a member of the Committee for Economic Cooperation and Development , a delegate in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and Deputy Chairperson of the German-South Caucasian parliamentary group.

Positions

Sommer advocated strengthening the Berlin districts vis-à-vis the Senate . She called for the district offices to be adequately financed and staffed for their tasks and for the principle of subsidiarity to be respected . The districts should have a stronger political voice.

Sommer calls for management positions in state companies to be filled equally. In 2010 she was involved in the amendment of the Berlin State Equal Opportunities Act (LGG) under the SPD-Left government in Berlin.

In the debate about the social ostracism of prostitution called for by Alice Schwarzer , she took an opposing position in 2013 and defended the liberalization through the red-green prostitution law of 2002. Sommer criticized the appeal as a “huge step backwards into the Stone Age under women's law, in which prostitutes legal and were defenseless, ”and signed the countercall appeal for prostitution .

Sommer is a supporter of freedom instead of fear .

Sommer advocates an independent Kurdish state in northern Iraq.

She criticizes the authoritarian politics of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and describes him as a “post-modern sultan” who is creating an anti-democratic state.

Victim of right-wing extremist violence

In March 2010, an arson attack was carried out on Helin Evrim Sommer's car. The Berlin police suspected perpetrators from the right-wing extremist scene. In 2011, Sommer was denigrated as "left-wing criminals" on the Internet portals of Berlin neo-Nazis and therefore filed a criminal complaint. In April 2018, she was threatened with rape by a Turkish right-wing radical.
