Robert Twigger
Robert Twigger (born January 1, 1965 in Brno , Czech Republic ) is a British poet , writer and adventurer. He currently lives in Cairo , Egypt .
Life
Robert Twigger studied at Balliol College , Oxford. He first began studying engineering, but after six weeks switched to political science, philosophy and economics. However, his studies were not very successful - he only graduated with an ordinary degree without honors, making him the only one in his class. However, his non-university activities were more successful. He won the Newdigate Prize , directed a film festival for student films and made two films himself. After graduating, he worked in the PR department of a record company and taught the English language in Japan for three years. Twigger wrote several fiction and non-fiction books and articles for the Daily Telegraph , the men's magazine Maxim and the magazine Esquire .
Works
- Angry White Pajamas : An Oxford Poet Trains With The Tokyo Riot Police (1997) is a book about Twigger's experiences in Japan. The main topic of the book is the Senshusei course , a training program of the Yoshinkan Honbu Dojo for the Aikidō training of the Tokyo police. He received the Somerset Maugham Award and the William Hill Sports Book of the Year for this book. The book wasnamed Best Sports Book in 25 yearsby Waterstone's in 2007.
- Big Snake: The Hunt for the World's Longest Python (1999) describes Twigger's unsuccessful attempt to catch a 30-foot snake for a price of $ 50,000.
- The Extinction Club (2001) describes Twiggers research of David deer , a deer breed , was adopted by the it was extinct.
- Being a Man (in the lousy modern world) (2002) describes Twigger's thoughts on the nature of masculinity and its point of view at the beginning of the 21st century.
- Voyageur - Across the Rocky Mountains in a Birchbark Canoe (2006) tells the story of Twigger's three-year, two-thousand-mile journey through northwest Canada in the footsteps of the explorer and trapper Alexander MacKenzie .
- Lost Oasis: A Desert Adventure: In Search Of Paradise (2007) is a desert adventure developed on the basis of the story of Ladislaus Almásys (also the template for The English Patient ).
- Real Men Eat Puffer Fish (2008) contains humorous advice for men.
- Dr Ragab's Universal Language (2009) is a novel set in Cairo and Germany.
Robert Twigger also published several collections of poetry, including The Wolf People - INPOPA Anthology 2002 , which also contains poems by Doris Lessing .
Expeditions
Twigger's failed attempt to catch the record-breaking snake was the subject of a Channel 4 documentary, which, like the book, is titled Big Snake .
In 2004 Twigger took part in an expedition that took a trip through Canada in the footsteps of the explorer and trapper Alexander MacKenzie . The group was the first since 1973 to make the trip in birch bark canoes.
In addition to his career as a professional writer, Robert Twigger regularly travels through the desert with the team at The Explorer School . In the winter of 2009/2010, the group followed a route taken by the German explorer Gerhard Rohlfs , which he had used in 1874.
