Robert W. Bower

Robert W. Bower (born June 12, 1936 in Santa Monica , California ) is an American electrical engineer and university professor.

From 1954 to 1958 he served in the US Air Force . He received his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1962, his master's degree in engineering in 1963 and his Ph. D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1973 .

In 1965 he went to Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, where he invented the Self Aligned Gate MOSFET , which he patented in 1969. From 1987 to 2000 he taught at the University of California, Davis . In 1997 he was honored for the invention of the MOSFET by being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame .
