Robert Wilson Shufeldt (born December 1, 1850 in New York City , † January 21, 1934 in Washington, DC ) was an American ornithologist , doctor, and army officer .

Life

Shufeldt was the son of the fleet admiral and hobby ornithologist Robert Wilson Shufeldt senior (1822-1895) and his wife Sarah H. Abercrombie Shufeldt. The family moved to Stamford, Connecticut in the late 1850s and to Cuba during the Civil War . In his youth, Shufeldt developed an interest in ornithology and entomology and built up an insect collection. From 1870 to 1873 he attended Cornell University ; three years later he received his MD (Doctor of Medicine) from Columbian College (now George Washington University ).

Shufeldt's first scientific article, Osteology of the Burrowing Owl , appeared in 1881. Much of his early work was published by the US Geological Survey. In the early 1880s, he served in various positions at the Army Medical Museum . In 1904 he was promoted to major .

In 1876 Shufeldt married Catherine Babcock, who died in 1892. Another marriage was signed to Florence Audubon three years later, but soon divorced. In 1898 he finally married Alfhild Dagny Lowum. Shufeldt had two sons.

In 1908 Shufeldt published the more than 600-page work Studies of the Human Form for Artists, Sculptors and Scientists , richly illustrated with nude photographs . He dedicated the work to the gynecologist Carl Heinrich Stratz ; both authors often adopted photos of the other in their works.
