Roberto Pace

Roberto Pace (born May 7, 1935 in Monteforte d'Alpone , † February 13, 2017 in San Bonifacio ) was an Italian entomologist and illustrator of beetles .

Life

Roberto Pace was the son of Attilio Pace and his wife Edvige, née Poli. In 1953 he graduated from the Liceo Statale Guarino Veronese in Verona . He then worked as a primary school teacher in Roncà . In 1968 he became assistant at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Verona , where he assisted by Sandro Ruffo , Giuseppe Osella and Adriano Zanetti to the family of Rove worked (Staphylinidae). His main interest was the study of the subfamilies Leptotyphlinae and Aleocharinae . He focused on the Italian region but also on New Caledonia, Madagascar, Africa and Chile. Until 2015, Pace described around 6400 species and 400 genera or subgenera. He published over 370 scientific articles, which appeared in the journals Memorie del Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Verona , Bollettino della Società Entomologica Italiana , Fragmenta Entomologica , Redia and Nouvelle revue d'entomologie , among others . Pace published the monographs Monografia del genere Leptusa Kraatz (Coleoptera Staphylinidae) (LXXV Contributo alla conoscenza delle Aleocharinae) (1989), Coleoptera. Staphylinidae. Leptotyphlinae. (1996), Insectes Coléoptères Staphylinidae Aleocharinae. Faune de Madagascar, 89 (1999) and Aleocharinae del Madagascar. Insectes Coléoptères Staphylinidae Aleocharinae (2005). One of the most salient features of his work was the detailed illustration of the beetles examined. In 1973 he discovered the beetle species Crowsoniella relicta in the Monti Lepini , a living fossil whose relatives already existed in the Tertiary .

Dedication names

In 1973 Henri Coiffait named the beetle species Allotyphlus pacei in honor of Roberto Pace, in 1976 Giuseppe Osella described the species Otiorhynchus (Lixorrhynchus) pacei , in 1983 Adriano Zanetti described the species Boreaphilus pacei , in 1998 Marc Tronquet described the species Cantaberella pacei , in 2001 Volker Assing named the species Cordalia pacei and in 2004 Aleš Smetana named the species Tropimenelytron pacei after Pace.
