Roberto Rodríguez (born April 1, 1946 in Tlaquiltenango , Morelos ), also known by his nickname El Monito , is a former Mexican football player in the position of a striker who has worked for decades in the coaching staff of his former club, Club America .

career

Monito Rodríguez grew up as the youngest of ten children in an extended family in the Mexican state of Morelos, south of the capital Mexico City . Enthusiastic about football at an early age , he began playing as a child in the offspring of his home club Tlahuica . In 1962 he moved to the junior division of CD Zacatepec , the leading club in his home state of Morelos at the time, which in the late 1950s was one of the big teams in Mexico and won the championship title and cup competition twice during this period .

In 1964, Monito received his first professional contract with the Cañeros and played there until 1969, when he was signed by Club America. With the Americanistas he won the championship title of the 1970/71 season . In 1973 he returned to the CD Zacatepec and ended his active career with the green-whites in the 1973/74 season .

Subsequently, Monito Rodríguez began a long-term coaching activity, which he exercised mainly in the service of Club America. He was responsible for various reserve teams in the second, third and fourth leagues and was the assistant coach of Jorge Silva Vieira when the first team won the championship title of the 1988/89 season.

In addition, Monito coached the Mexican junior national team at the U-16 World Cup, which was held in China for the first time in 1985 .
