Primera División (Mexico) 1988/89

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1988/89 season was the 45th regular championship round in Mexico since the introduction of the Primera División in the 1943/44 season.

Changes and mode

A new addition was the sporty climber from the second division , Cobras Ciudad Juárez. These replaced the Coyotes Neza , who had sold their license to the relegated athlete of the previous season , UAT Correcaminos, after ten years of membership in the first division, whereby the Correcaminos remained in the top division. Also new was Club Santos Laguna, which had acquired the first division license from the financially troubled Ángeles de Puebla . At the end of the 1988/89 season Atlético Potosino had to retire to the Segunda División , which was still second class at the time .

The competition was divided into 4 groups of 5 teams each. Regardless of this, each team in the league competed against each other twice (in one home and one away game). At the end of the league round, the top two teams in each group qualified for the final round, which was played in two groups of four teams each. The two group winners played the finals at the end of the season.

1 The match between Tampico-Madero FC and Club América, originally played on April 22, 1989, was abandoned in the 21st minute due to riots when the score was 0-0. The remaining 69 minutes were played on May 10, 1989 at the Estadio Nou Camp in León and were won 2-0 by Tampico-Madero FC. Tampico-Madero FC also had to play all other home games in other stadiums until the end of the season. The home games against UNAM, Monterrey and UAG were also played at the Estadio Nou Camp, the last home game against Atlético Potosino took place at the Estadio Olímpico Victoria in Ciudad Victoria .

2 With the meeting between Morelia and America on April 9, 1981, the Estadio Morelos was inaugurated.

3 The game between UAG and Irapuato on March 17, 1981 was abandoned in the 92nd minute when the score was 2-1 for the hosts after the floodlights went out and the penalty awarded to Irapuato in the final minute could not be taken. This was made up on April 2, 1981 and converted to the 2-2 final score.

4 Because two ineligible players were used for Toluca, the game that ended 0-0 on the pitch was subsequently rated 2-0 for UANL Tigres.

5 The match between Santos Laguna and Puebla was played at the Estadio Cerro Colorado , so this stadium in Tijuana (currently used exclusively for baseball ) was also the venue for a top division football match .

6 Due to a rule violation, Atlético Potosino's 1-0 home win on the pitch was canceled and subsequently scored 2-0 for UANL Tigres.

final

For the second time in a row there was a derby between two teams from the capital in the finals and for the second time after 1971/72 there was a Clásico Joven . While Cruz Azul prevailed at the first meeting 17 years ago, this time Club América - just like last year against the UNAM Pumas - retained the upper hand and won their twelfth championship title (the eighth since the introduction of the professional league ). The only player to score in both games was Carlos Hermosillo . He was involved in all 5 championship titles won by Club América in the 1980s and in 1997 was also involved in the eighth championship title of Cruz Azul .
