Liga Mayor 1944/45

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1944/45 season was the second season of the Mexican professional football league, which at that time still operated under the name Liga Mayor .

Newbies

After the opening season 1943/44 was played with ten teams, all of which were represented in the league in the season 1944/45, the following teams were added at the beginning of the season: Club León , CD Oro and Puebla FC .

particularities

The season started with a big surprise: As in the previous season, Real Club España lost 3-2 in their own place at the start of the season to a team from Orizaba , this time ADO . But after this unexpected opening defeat of last year's finalist and runner-up against last year's last, the Españistas all won their remaining eleven home games and only suffered three defeats away (including a 2-0 defeat at ADO), while the Albinegros, despite their two wins against the outstanding champions of 1944/45 season (eight points ahead of the newcomer Puebla FC, who surprisingly finished the season in second place) ended up in twelfth place and only the newcomer Oro de Guadalajara could leave behind.

Also in the 1944/45 season, on average, significantly more goals were scored than today, although the rate of 4.99 per game from the previous year could not be maintained. This time 713 goals were scored in 156 games, which corresponds to a goal quotient of 4.57 per game. The decline was mainly due to the newcomer from Puebla , who scored fewer goals than the other top teams, but at the same time formed the strongest defensive in the league, conceding only 30 goals and seven clean sheets, while the "Spanish" teams (España and Asturias ) continued to “produce goals on the assembly line”, but both only played twice to zero.

Play with the most goals

  • Most of the goals were scored in the matches between Guadalajara and Atlante (8: 2) and Marte and Asturias (7: 3)
  • Biggest home win: Atlante vs Oro 8-0
  • Biggest away win: America vs Asturias 7-0

Cross table for the 1944/45 season

The cross table shows the results of all games of this season. The name of the home team is listed in the left column, a three-digit abbreviation for the visiting team in the top line.

One of the most interesting aspects is that the penultimate ADO was twice successful against the champions España. It is also worth mentioning that Atlas lost all home games against the top three teams, but won all eight home games against the teams from fifth place in the table downwards.
