Primera División (Mexico) 2003/04

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2003/04 season of the Mexican Primera División was formed for the last time from 20 teams. In order to achieve the desired number of 18 participants for the coming season , two other teams had to leave the league in addition to the relegated San Luis. According to a meeting resolution of the owners of the first division clubs, it hit the teams of Querétaro FC and CD Irapuato, the promoted last year.

The 2003 Apertura champion was CF Pachuca, who was fourth in the overall table for the season. Master of the Clausura 2004 was the team of the UNAM Pumas, which with 16 points ahead of pursuers (and final opponent) Guadalajara was by far the best team of the entire season.

There were a total of 380 point games, 28 games in the Liguilla and 6 games in the Repechaje .

Most of the games (48) were played by Deportivo Toluca FC and Cruz Azul. Toluca had to go through the Repechaje in the 2003 Apertura and reached the semi-finals in both seasons . Cruz Azul was the only team that had to go through the Repechaje in both tournaments and failed once in the quarter-finals and in the semi-finals.

    Chivas Guadalajara - UNAM Pumas 1: 1 1: 1 0-0

In the final, the rule does not apply, according to which, in the event of a tie, the team with the better points of the league round wins. These would have been the Pumas, who with 41 points would have had an advantage over Guadalajara with 34. So the decision was made in the penalty shoot-out, where the Pumas were able to prevail 5-4. The unlucky fellow at Guadalajara was Rafael Medina , who could not convert the last penalty.
