Primera División (Mexico) 1968/69

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1968/69 season was the 26th season of the highest Mexican football professional league . The relegated previous season Atlético Morelia was replaced by the promoted CF Laguna .

Changing of the guard

Cruz Azul , the upcoming series champion of the 1970s , won his first championship title in the 1968/69 season and also fought head-to-head for the championship with Chivas , the series champion of the 1960s in the next two seasons . Chivas emerged as the winner again in the following season 1969/70 (it was her last championship title for a period of 17 years!) And in the subsequent Torneo México 70 Cruz Azul was able to prevail again.

The preliminary decision in the title race of the 1968/69 season fell on the 26th match day, when the leaders Chivas (44:22 goals and 37 points) received the pursuer Cruz Azul (40:21 goals and 37 points) in the home Estadio Jalisco . Until then, Chivas had only suffered two defeats (1-0 at Deportivo Toluca and 2-2 at Cruz Azul) and was still unbeaten at home. Cruz Azul won the top game and also his subsequent encounters against CF Monterrey (3-0) and León FC (3-2), while the disaffected Chivas team from the last four games only got one point in the prestige derby against Atlas (0 : 0) and also lost the following two home games against Necaxa (0: 2) and the Jabatos (0: 3).

Relegation battle

While the title race was decided prematurely, the relegation battle remained exciting well beyond the end of the season. With two unexpectedly high away wins (5: 1 at Club Necaxa and 3: 0 at runner-up Chivas ) at the end of the season, CF Nuevo León was able to catch up on points with CD Oro and even had the better goal quotient , but none in the relegation battle Role played. Therefore, a playoff was necessary to stay in the league, which was played on March 6, 1969 in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City and ended 1: 1 after 120 minutes. Because the regulations did not provide for a penalty shoot-out , a second play-off was required on March 9, 1969, which also ended in a draw after extra time (this time 2-2). Thus a third game was required on March 13, 1969, which Oro won 1-0 with a goal from Bernardino Brambila in the 89th minute (!). This victory meant for Oro relegation and the downgrade of the Jabatos after three years of first division membership in the second division .
