Primera División (Mexico) 1950/51

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1950/51 season was the first season in which the soccer professional league introduced in Mexico in 1943/44 operated as the Primera División , after having been referred to as the Liga Mayor for the previous seven years . The name change resulted from the fact that in the same season (1950/51) with the Segunda División for the first time a nationwide second division began playing and from then on there were promoted and relegated between the two leagues.

Important events

Compared to the previous season , in which 14 teams had participated, only twelve teams were represented in the newly introduced Primera División. The reason for this was the withdrawal of the clubs Asturias , España and Moctezuma from the first division and the new addition of Club Necaxa , which had initially retained its amateur status when the professional league was introduced.

The first relegation at the end of the season was Club San Sebastián and the first promoted from the Segunda Division of the second division champions CD Zacatepec .

This season the Club Atlas brought the championship title to Guadalajara for the first time , which later was also achieved by city rivals Oro and a total of eleven times by arch rivals Chivas . But Atlas himself could never repeat this success.

Record results and title fight

Club Atlante achieved their highest win of the season on April 19, 1951, the penultimate matchday of the season, 6-0 against Club Marte . It was still not a result of great joy for the Atlantistas, because three days later the league leaders Atlas won the Clásico Tapatío against the CD Guadalajara and was therefore unattainable for the pursuers Atlante, which means that the direct clash between the two teams on the last day of the game was only for the statistician mattered. Atlante won the game 2-1, which was not enough for the championship title, the Atlas won by one point, but at least secured the runner-up ahead of the old rival Necaxa , who was one point behind in third place and his last game with Won 4-3 at CD Tampico . The highest-scoring game took place on April 1, 1951 and was won by CD Guadalajara with the result of 7: 3 against CD Veracruz .
