The 1989/90 season was the 46th regular championship round in Mexico since the introduction of the Primera División in the 1943/44 season.

Changes and mode

A new addition was the CD Veracruz , which acquired the first division license of the sporty climber from the second division , Potros Neza . The Tiburones Rojos replaced the relegated the previous year , Atlético Potosino . At the end of the 1989/90 season, the traditional club Atlante, for the second time after 1975/76 , had to join the Segunda División , which was still second class at the time .

The competition was divided into 4 groups of 5 teams each. Regardless of this, each team in the league competed against each other twice (in one home and one away game). At the end of the league round, the two best-placed teams in each group qualified for the final round, which, starting with the quarter-finals, was played in play-off mode.
