The 2002-03 season of the Mexican Primera División learned during the winter break so far a change, as a team, and license of Atlético Celaya by an entrepreneur from the state of Morelos purchased and in its capital, Cuernavaca were transplanted where they in the second half under the name Colibries home was. Although the balance sheet of both clubs showed a remarkable 15th place in the overall season table, the team finished last in the three-year ranking and therefore left the first division at the end of the season. It was replaced in the coming season by the CD Irapuato .

The 2002 Apertura champions were Deportivo Toluca FC, the team with the highest points of the season. Champion of the Clausura 2003 was the CF Monterrey, who had occupied eighth place in the overall table for the season. On November 16, 2003, the two teams faced each other in the Supercup final , which Toluca won 4-2 on penalties at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City . It was the last time so far that the Supercup was played in just one game.

There were a total of 380 point games, 28 games in the Liguilla and two games in the Repechaje .

Most of the games (50) were played by the Monarcas Morelia team, which had reached the finals of both tournaments, but lost to both Toluca (1-0 and 1: 4) and Monterrey (1: 3 and 0-0).

Highest results

The highest-scoring game of the season took place on October 27, 2002 between San Luis and UNAM Pumas (6: 3). The biggest home wins of the season were a 7-1 (Pumas vs Chivas on October 19, 2002) and a 6-0 result three times (Atlas vs Pumas on August 31, 2002, Toluca vs Tecos on October 19, 2002 and Morelia vs Necaxa on November 2, 2002).

The biggest away victories were a 6-1 by Morelia in Puebla on February 16, 2003 and a 5-0 by América at the Tecos on May 11, 2003.

Atlético Celaya finished the first half of the season with 5 wins, 6 draws and 8 defeats with a goal difference of 24:32. In the second half of the season the team played under the name Colibries de Cuernavaca and recorded 6 wins, 5 draws and 8 defeats with a goal difference of 24:27.

    One of the tense highlights of the quarter-finals was the Clásico Chilango , the duel between the capital clubs Cruz Azul and UNAM Pumas.

    CD Guadalajara, assigned to Group 4, only finished third in this group despite its 31 points, because Atlante (34) and Veracruz (32) also belonged to Group 4. In contrast, Cruz Azul landed in second place in Group 3 with 24 points, so the two teams had to compete with each other for the preliminary round in the Repechaje . After both teams won their home game 4-1, Chivas Guadalajara's better score ultimately decided to qualify for the quarter-finals.
