Primera División (Mexico) 1996/97

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1996/97 season of the Mexican Primera División was the first regular season in which two champions were determined and the system of Apertura and Clausura, which is common in other parts of Latin America , was introduced. Until the 2002/03 season, when the renaming to Apertura (German opening) and Clausura (German closing) also officially took place in Mexico , the round-trip tournament was still called Invierno (winter) and Verano (summer).

As has been customary in Mexico for a long time, the Liguillas procedure was retained, i.e. the respective champions were determined in a knockout procedure after the point game round . Although everyone plays against everyone in the Mexican round-robin tournament, the championship was divided into four groups in many seasons. That season, 18 teams took part and therefore groups 1 and 2 consisted of five teams each, and groups 3 and 4 consisted of four teams each. Qualified for the Liguillas were the four group winners and the two with the best points in second place.

To determine the other two play-off participants, the runners-up, who had scored fewer points than the best third-placed players in the other groups, had to deal with these opponents in a qualifying round called Repechaje . In the summer tournament, Club León with 23 and CF Monterrey with 19 had fewer points than the two best third-placed finishers in the other groups, in which Atlas had 26 and Toros Neza had 24 points. In the winter tournament, third-placed Atlético Morelia scored more points (25) than group runner-up Tecos UAG (20).

At the start of the season and at the end of the season, the UANL Tigres and CF Pachuca swapped places. The Tigres, which have been in the top division since the 1974/75 season, experienced their only relegation at the end of the 1995/96 preseason and returned to the top division at the end of the 1996/97 season. The Tigres were replaced by the promoted CF Pachuca, who immediately relegated at the end of the 1996/97 season. But the Tuzos also managed to immediately rise again, followed by the best phase in their club history since then. Not only have they been permanently represented in the first division since 1998/99, but they have also won the championship title six times, the CONCACAF Champions League four times and the Copa Sudamericana in 2006 .

Quarter finals

Atlante was not only the leader of the overall season table with 66 points, but also a convincing superlider of the opening tournament in 1996 with 38 points. In the 17 games of the first round, the Potros had only three defeats (0: 1 each at CD Guadalajara and Santos Laguna as well as at home against Toros Neza), received the fewest goals (11) and only got more than one goal in one game (3-2 win at Puebla FC). It is all the more surprising that “feared opponent” Toros Neza literally overran the Potros in the Liguillas with an overall result of 9: 2.

Liguillas

Quarter finals

In the trial of strength with the first round champion Santos Laguna, the upcoming second round champion CD Guadalajara clearly prevailed. Necaxa qualified against his old rival Atlante with a tie (28 each in the back round table) only because of the better goal difference (33:20 compared to 23:19).

1 Necaxa due to the better goal difference in the league round.

Semifinals

While the CD Guadalajara was able to prevail both in the previous quarter-finals and in the subsequent final, it made the jump to the final only because of the more points scored in the second half (34 versus 25 from Morelia).

Atlético Morelia - CD Guadalajara 1: 1 1 1-0 0: 1

final

In the half-time break of the second leg played at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara , it did not look like the eventual shooting event when the score was 0-0. This changed just a few minutes after the break, when Chivas won the match within just five minutes. In the 51st minute Gustavo Nápoles had shot his team in the lead and five minutes later the “match winner” made the preliminary decision with a 3-0 win. Later, Nápoles scored the goals to 5-0 (74th) and the final score of 6: 1 (85th minute).
