Primera División (Mexico) 1953/54

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1953/54 season was the eleventh season of the highest Mexican professional football league introduced in 1943/44 . Club Marte , which moved from Mexico City to Cuernavaca at the beginning of the season and had twice won the old Mexico amateur championship in previous years , crowned the season with its only professional football title .

Moved up and down

At the end of the previous season, Deportivo Toluca rose to the top division, in which the Diablos Rojos have since been permanently represented and are now one of the most successful teams in the Mexican league with ten championship titles . They replaced last year's relegated CF La Piedad , who was only able to stay in the top division for one season. At the end of the season, the Club Atlas was relegated to the Segunda División for the first time , but managed (as in the two following cases) the immediate promotion.

particularities

After the penultimate matchday, Club Deportivo Oro led the table with 25 points in front of the tied teams Club Deportivo Marte and Puebla FC with 24 points each. On the last day of the match there was a showdown in Parque Oro between table leader Oro and his closest rival Marte. In this game that was decisive for the championship (both clubs also had a better goal balance than third-placed Puebla, who thus had no realistic chances of winning the title and did not get more than 1: 1 in the home game against relegation-threatened Club Atlante ), the guests already went in in the second minute of the game and increased after half an hour to the final score of 2-0.

It is worth mentioning the fact that both the master Marte and the runner-up Oro lost four of their eleven home games each, with only one goal (Marte) or twice (Oro) without conceding a goal. In contrast, the table penultimate Atlante lost "only" three home games and remained in these six times without conceding a goal. Eighth-placed León FC also had an almost identical record ; with the difference, however, that he also won all "to zero home games", while Atlante had to be content with a goalless draw in two cases.

The highest win of the season was achieved by CD Guadalajara on September 20, 1953 (7th matchday) 7-1 against last year's champions CD Tampico , who was also involved in the highest-scoring game of the 1953/54 season on February 3rd, 1954 (21st matchday), which the Club Necaxa decided 5: 4 in his favor.
