The 2008/09 season began on July 26, 2008 with a total of 6 games. One of them was the match between Atlas and Jaguares (5-0), which ended with the highest win of the season in the entire Apertura . On May 9, 2009, the last game day of the regular season, Atlas was again the focus of the action, but this time in the role of the victim. Because with the 5-0 win at the Estadio Jalisco , CF Pachuca achieved the highest away win of the entire 2008/09 season.

The 2008 Apertura champion was Toluca, the team with the highest points for the entire season. The champions of the Clausura 2009 were the Pumas, the third best team of the season in terms of points.

There were a total of 306 point games and 28 games in the Liguilla , the Spanish name for the play-offs , so a total of 334 games for the two championships.

In the regular round of points, each team had to play 34 games, 17 each in the Apertura and the Clausura. Theoretically, up to 46 games were possible for a team if they had reached the finals in both the Apertura and the Clausura. However, such a constellation did not occur in the 2008/09 season. Most games (42 each) had Toluca and UNAM Pumas, who reached the Liguillas in both competitions and each won the championship once and eliminated once in the quarterfinals.

CD Veracruz , relegated in the previous year , was replaced by the newly promoted Indios de Ciudad Juárez. At the end of the 2008/09 season Necaxa rose (for the first time in its professional history!) From the Primera División and will be replaced by the promoted Querétaro FC in the 2009/10 season .

The point game round

Home game ticket of the Indios from their first season against Atlante (0-0), the game with the greatest possible distance between two teams from the Primera División.

In the regular season (which did not take into account the Liguilla ), 1-0 was the most common result. It occurred a total of 50 times and corresponds to a share of 16.34 percent in a total of 306 games. This means that on average every sixth game ended with 1: 0 or 0: 1. Home teams won twice as often with this result (namely 34 times) than away teams (16 times). This corresponds to a share of 11.11 percent from the perspective of the home team and a share of 5.23 percent from the perspective of the away team. Chivas Guadalajara won most often 1-0 (7 times in total, five of them at home and twice away), while CF Pachuca and CD Cruz Azul did not win a single game 1-0.

The second most frequent result was the 1: 1 (44 times) before the 2: 1 (42 times), which is divided into 25 home and 17 away wins and is also the most common away win result.

The highest-scoring game took place on August 23, 2008 (5th matchday of Apertura) between Chivas Guadalajara and Santos Laguna (3-5). The highest wins ended 5-0 and were achieved in the following games:

  • Atlas - Jaguares 5-0 on July 26, 2008 (1st matchday of Apertura)
  • Chivas - Pachuca 5-0 on February 28, 2009 (8th matchday of Clausura)
  • Atlas - Pachuca 0-5 on May 9, 2009 (17th matchday of Clausura)

In the total of 306 point games, 822 goals were scored, which corresponds to an average of 2.69. 471 goals (average 1.54) were scored by the home teams and 351 goals (average 1.15) by the away teams.

    The Liguillas

In the Liguillas (the Spanish name for the play-offs ) of Apertura and Clausura, there were a total of 14 matches with a return leg, making a total of 28 games. The home advantage was de facto canceled when (after normal playing time) 11 home wins were compared to 9 away wins. 8 games ended in a draw. The goal difference from the home teams' point of view (without extra time and without penalty shoot-outs) was 36:31. The average goal score in the Liguillas was 2.39 or (from the home team's point of view) 1.29 to 1.11.

Four of a total of 14 comparisons ended in a draw in the overall result. While in the quarter-finals of the Apertura between Tigres and Atlante (twice 1: 1) and the semi-finals of the Clausura between Puebla and Pumas (each 2: 1 for the away team), the higher number of points achieved in the regular half-season was decisive for the advancement of Atlante and Pumas the better season position in the finals was not taken into account. There Toluca prevailed (after two 2-0 successes of the respective away team) in the Apertura with 7: 6 on penalties against Cruz Azul and won his ninth championship, while in the Clausura the Pumas (after a 1-0 home win and a 1: 2 away defeat) at CF Pachuca through a goal by Pablo Barrera in the 107th minute, they equalized in extra time and gave them the sixth championship.

The most common result of the Liguillas was the 2-0, which was achieved a total of six times (three home and three away wins). The second most frequent results were 2: 1 and 3: 1, which were each achieved five times.

The highest victory in the Liguillas was the 3-0 of the Pumas in the quarter-finals of the Clausura 2009, with which the eventual winner of the competition made up for the 0-2 first leg defeat at the Tecos.

Of the 18 teams in the league round, 13 teams qualified for the Liguillas. Ten teams were able to qualify once for the Liguilla and only three teams managed to qualify twice. These were Toluca (winner of the Apertura 2008) and the UNAM Pumas (winner of the Clausura 2009) as well as the team of UAG Tecos, which each met the eventual winner in the quarter-finals and thus retired early. Reaching the semi-finals was completely balanced, because the total of eight participants from both tournaments were eight different teams, so that neither team made it to the semi-finals twice.

    Santos Laguna - Deportivo Toluca FC 1: 2 0-0 1: 2
final total First leg Return leg
    Cruz Azul - Deportivo Toluca FC 2: 2 0: 2 2-0

After the 2-0 first leg win at the Estadio Azul, the preliminary decision seemed to have already been made. But Cruz Azul also secured a 2-0 away win in the second leg, requiring a penalty shoot-out, which Toluca won 7-6.

    Liguillas of the Clausura 2009

Quarter finals total First leg Return leg
    Puebla FC - CF Monterrey 5: 3 3: 1 2: 2
    UAG Tecos - UNAM Pumas 2: 3 2-0 0: 3
    Jaguares de Chiapas - CF Pachuca 1: 5 1: 3 0: 2
Indios de Cd. Juarez - Deportivo Toluca FC 1-0 1-0 0-0

The newly promoted Indios prevails against the defending champion Toluca.

Semifinals total First leg Return leg
    Puebla FC - UNAM Pumas 3: 3 1: 2 2: 1
    Indios de Cd. Juarez - CF Pachuca 3: 4 0: 2 3: 2

The Pumas prevailed against Puebla (26) due to the more points scored in the league (28). After the 2-1 away win, they already had one leg in the final, but were already 2-0 behind in the second leg in front of their own audience after half an hour. The decisive goal to make it 1: 2, which enabled them to reach the final, was scored by Darío Verón in the 89th minute!

final total First leg Return leg
    UNAM Pumas - CF Pachuca 3: 2 1-0 2: 2nV

Because Pachuca were 2-1 ahead in the second leg after 90 minutes, the decision was not made until extra time. Pablo Barrera equalized in the 107th minute, making his Pumas their sixth championship title.
