The Estadio Universitario is a football stadium in San Nicolás de los Garza in the Mexican state of Nuevo León in the catchment area of the state capital Monterrey . It is located on the main campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), the third largest university in the country. It is mainly used for football and the first division team Tigres de la UANL plays its home games here.
The stadium is also known as The Volcano ( El Volcán ) or The Colossus of San Nicolás de los Garza ( El Coloso de San Nicolás de los Garza ). Some opposing players have even called it a true monster; because the stadium, which is often sold out, often leaves an intimidating effect on the opponent.
history
The stadium was opened on May 30, 1967 with a capacity for around 43,000 visitors and today has a capacity of around 42,000.
This is where La Ola originated
According to Mexican chroniclers, the Estadio Universitario started what is now known worldwide: La Ola , the wave . It happened on September 18, 1984 during a friendly game between Mexico and Argentina that ended 1-1. Two minutes after Jorge Burruchaga gave the Argentines the lead, Manuel Negrete equalized with a fantastic goal for the Mexicans. The enthusiasm about this made hundreds of arms fly up at the same time and move synchronously across the stands. This spectacle was replicated in the same stadium at the World Cup 86 and broadcast worldwide as La Ola via satellite . It is now practiced all over the world.
Soccer World Cup 1986
The Estadio Universitario was the venue for four games of the 1986 World Cup , in which, however, if a decision that was only made on penalties was not taken into account, an average of only 0.5 goals was scored. First, two group F group matches took place here: on June 2, the encounter between Morocco and Poland (0-0) and five days later Poland's victory over Portugal (1-0).
Because Morocco surprisingly won the group (ahead of England, Poland and Portugal), they played their round of 16 against the second in preliminary group E, Germany. A late free-kick goal by Lothar Matthäus saved the German team from embarrassment on their national holiday at the time (June 17) and secured them the quarter-finals, where they had to deal with the hosts on June 21.
The game, which was rather rudely played by both sides (with eight warnings and two dismissals for Thomas Berthold and Javier Aguirre ) had few highlights and ended goalless after 120 minutes, so that a penalty shoot-out had to decide the semi-finals. Here the German shooters ( Klaus Allofs , Andreas Brehme , Lothar Matthäus and Pierre Littbarski ) all proved to be on target, while of the Mexican shooters only Manuel Negrete scored the German goal to make it 1-1. In contrast, Fernando Quirarte and Raul Servin failed with their far too weak and unplaced shots at the German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher .
Concerts
The band Queen performed in front of more than 50,000 fans during their The Game Tour on October 9, 1981. This was their first and only concert in this country.
