The season 1949/50 was the seventh season of the Mexican professional football -Liga, which this year for the last time under the term Liga Mayor changed its name and from the following season, the new name Primera División received.

particularities

The season was played with only 14 teams after the ADO left the league at the end of the previous season .

After the 1949/50 season, profound changes began in the Mexican league structure. At the beginning of the 1950/51 season, a nationwide second division was launched for the first time , which in the first decades of its existence was called Segunda División and thus ensured that the first division was henceforth called Primera División .

In addition, at the end of the 1949/50 season, the traditional “ Spanish ” clubs España and Asturias left the league and have only been active in the Liga Española de Fútbol de México on an amateur basis since then . This step marked the end of the "foreign" clubs not only in the first division, but in all of Mexico's professional football .

The Moctezuma UD, sponsored by the Moctezuma Brewery , also left the league at the end of the season, so that the city of Orizaba , which was represented with two clubs in the league until the last season and is considered the cradle of football in Mexico, is no longer in the top division was.
