For the 2011/12 season , the fictitious group formation of the Mexican league , which previously served as the basis for qualifying for the Liguilla , was abolished . This season, the overall table of the respective half-season is decisive for the qualification and the teams meet on the basis of their placement. It is interesting that in the Apertura both the Superlíder , the team with the highest points (Guadalajara), and the second best team in terms of points (Cruz Azul) failed in the quarter-finals.
With an overall result of 4: 4, Santos Laguna prevailed against Morelia (7th place) thanks to his better placement (4th) in the final table of the Apertura.

The Tigres survived the first five games of the Liguilla without conceding a goal. The only goal they conceded in the final second leg against their north Mexican rival Santos Laguna brought them temporarily into dire straits. Because it meant the 0-1 deficit after 30 minutes, which also existed at break and equalized the first leg win. But in the second half the Tigres turned up and achieved a 3-1 success and their first championship title after almost 30 years.
