Primera División (Mexico) 1969/70
The 1969/70 season was the 27th season of the highest Mexican football professional league . The relegated preseason CF Nuevo León was replaced by the promoted CF Torreón .
The end of an era
In the 1969/70 season, the CD Guadalajara won its eighth championship title within the last 14 seasons. At the same time, until the 1986/87 season , when the ninth championship title followed, it was the last triumph of the Chivas team, which in the 1970s was often only found in the lower regions of the table and was nicknamed " Chivas flacas " during this time . "Ailing goats") received.
The start of the season for the upcoming champions was by no means ideal. An opening defeat at CD Irapuato (2: 4) was followed by a 0: 1 at home in Estadio Jalisco against Club León . It was the fourth home defeat in a row across all seasons and Chivas hadn't scored a single goal in any of the games. The last home win was dated December 5, 1968 and was retracted against Club León, of all places, with the game already ended after 75 minutes at the (final) score of 2-0 for Chivas, because León only had six players on the field .
Because the second home game of the season (2: 2 against Deportivo Toluca on June 25, 1969) could not be won, it was not until the derby against Atlas that a victory at the Estadio Jalisco (3: 1) could be achieved for the first time. However, it was officially an away game, so the next real home win (also 3-1 against arch-rivals America ) had to be a few days away. As with the last home win against León when the game ended prematurely, the circumstances surrounding this game were exceptional. Because heavy rain set in, the game was canceled on July 12, 1969 when the half-time score was 2-0 for the hosts. The second half was played on the following day and ended 1: 1.
particularities
For the first time in the history of the Mexican league, a playoff for second place was played because the goal quotient was not used to determine the runner-up in this season . The CD Cruz Azul and the CD Veracruz had to “detain” and play another game on January 4, 1970 in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City . This ended 3: 3, so that the runner -up was determined in a subsequent penalty shootout , which Cruz Azul won 3: 2.
Because of the special tournament Mexico 70 there was no direct relegation. It was planned that the bottom of the table CF Laguna would later play against the bottom of the table of the special tournament ( CD Oro ) to remain in the league, but because the league was expanded to 18 teams in the 1970/71 season , there was no relegation.
