Liga Mayor 1945/46

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1945/46 season was the third season of the Mexican professional football league, which at that time still operated under the name Liga Mayor .

Newbies

After the 1944/45 season was played with 13 teams, all of which were also represented in the league in the 1945/46 season, the teams from CF Monterrey , San Sebastián de León and CD Tampico were added at the beginning of the season .

particularities

Already the first match day, which was played on August 19, 1945, came up with some bangs: the reigning champions España lost at the start of the season, as in the previous two years, on their own place against a team from Orizaba , this time against Moctezuma with 4: 6th The upcoming champions Veracruz also started with a home defeat against the capital city club América (2: 3), which received more goals this season than in any other season. Atlante won 10-3 at CD Tampico and achieved the first double-digit victory in the history of the Primera División . Puebla FC won even more clearly on the same day , defeating CD Marte 8-0 .

On the second day of the match Moctezuma caused a stir, or rather their player Martín Cuburu , who scored all six goals in the 6-0 win against CF Monterrey . But it was to get worse for Monterrey. Three weeks later, the team was on their way to an away game at CD Oro when the bus in the town of San Juan de los Lagos, not far from Guadalajara , was involved in an accident and caught fire. Eight players suffered severe burns and two of them, Enrique Lizano and Guillermo Vidal, succumbed to serious injuries and died about three months later. Over the course of the season, Monterrey suffered a few bitter defeats, including three in double digits. They received their bitterest defeat on May 26, 1946 with 0:14 from the upcoming master Veracruz. At the end of the season, Monterrey finished last in the table with 133 goals conceded and withdrew voluntarily, because there were no relegated players at that time.

Play with the most goals

Most of the goals came in the matches between Veracruz and Monterrey (14-0) and Atlante and Monterrey (10-4). Only one less goal fell in the match between Tampico and Atlante, which ended 3:10.

Records for "eternity"

The 14-0 victory of CD Veracruz over CF Monterrey on May 26, 1946 is the highest victory in the history of the Mexican Primera División. In addition, Atlante's 121 goals and CD Veracruz's 105 goals are the highest number of goals ever scored by any two teams in the history of the Primera División. At the same time, the 133 goals conceded by CF Monterrey and the 101 goals conceded by Club América are the most goals that any two teams have suffered in the history of the Primera División.
