Primera División (Mexico) 1965/66
The 1965/66 season was the 23rd season of the highest Mexican football professional league . The relegated from the preseason CD Nacional was replaced by the promoted Ciudad Madero .
particularities
After three runners-up in the seasons 1959/60 , 1961/62 and 1963/64 (always behind arch rivals Chivas Guadalajara ), Club América won its first championship title in the professional league that season.
A decisive factor on the way there was the good start to the season. Because the first six games were all won, while the reigning champions Chivas also won his first five away games, but could only record a single point from the first three home games. The negative climax of the bad start to the season was a 7-1 home defeat against Cruz Azul on matchday five. On the seventh matchday, Chivas won his first home game against arch rivals America, of all places, and added the first minus points to it.
Despite the bad start to the season of the serial champions in recent years (seven championships in nine seasons) Chivas fought for a long time for the top of the table. After 23 match days, Club America was just one point ahead of their closest rival Chivas with 33 points. A 2-0 home defeat against CD Irapuato on matchday 24 threw Chivas back, while Club America pulled away on three points with a 1-0 win against CD Oro . América's mistake on matchday 25 at the later relegated CD Zacatepec (0: 1) could not use the pursuers from Guadalajara because Chivas at Deportivo Toluca and Atlas did not get beyond a 1: 1 at CF Madero . Because America allowed themselves another slip (2: 3) in the following home game against city rivals Necaxa , Chivas (1: 1 against CD Oro) and Atlas (2: 0 against CD Veracruz ) each came closer to one point. Because the three teams scored two wins on the next two match days, America was two match days before the end of the season with 39 points as close as possible to the two pursuers with 38 points each. With a 3-0 defeat at the UNAM Pumas on the penultimate matchday, Chivas said goodbye to the title fight. But Atlas (4: 3 against Cruz Azul) was able to draw level on points with leaders América (0: 0 at CF Madero) and was almost tied in goal difference (America 54:28, Atlas 53:28). With a 2-0 home win against CD Veracruz and the simultaneous defeat of CF Atlas at CF Atlante (2: 3) on the last day of the match, Club America won its first title in the Primera División .
