Primera División (Mexico) 1972/73
The 1972/73 season was the 30th regular championship round in Mexico since the introduction of the Primera División in the 1943/44 season.
The relegated from the previous season , CD Irapuato , was replaced by the promoted CF Atlas.
As in the previous season, the two best-placed teams in each group (Cruz Azul and Atlético Español in the "Pirata Fuente" group and León and Atlas in the "Juan Carreño" group) qualified for the semi-finals for the championship this season, while the the last two teams in each group (Zacatepec and Pachuca in the “Pirata Fuente” group and Torreón and Laguna in the “Juan Carreño” group) had to go to the relegation round.
In the championship finals, the two group winners (Cruz Azul and León) prevailed, who played the finals against each other. Because there was no winner after the first and second leg (the game in León ended 1-1, the second leg in Mexico City 0-0), there was a third final game for the first time since the introduction of the Liguilla , which was played in Puebla . Here Cruz Azul prevailed with 2: 1 and thus defended the championship won last year.
In the relegation round, the two teams from Torreón were able to save themselves prematurely and sent the teams from Zacatepec and Pachuca to the relegation final. Both games were played in Mexico City, with Zacatepec (0-0 and 1-0) securing relegation.
