Primera División (Mexico) 1971/72

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Before the 1971/72 season began, the following changes occurred:

  • Cruz Azul moved from Jasso to the capital ;
  • Necaxa was acquired by a group of Spanish businessmen and renamed Atlético Español;
  • The previous season's relegated team, Atlas de Guadalajara , was replaced by promoted San Luis.

While in the previous season the first two of the group were qualified for the championship final and the last two had to go to relegation, this season the two best-placed teams in each group (Cruz Azul and América in Group A and Monterrey and Guadalajara in Group B) were for the Semi-finals qualified for the championship, while the last two teams in each group (Veracruz and Atlético Español in Group A and Torreón and Irapuato in Group B) had to go to the relegation round.

In the championship finals, the two teams from Group A prevailed (Cruz Azul against Guadalajara and America against Monterrey), so that in the final there was a match between the “newcomer” in Mexico City (Cruz Azul) and the “top dog” of the capital (America) came. In the derby now known as " Clásico Joven ", Cruz Azul had the upper hand 4-1 and prevented last year's champions América from defending their title.

In the relegation round, too, the teams in group A were able to prevail and sent the representatives of group B to the relegation final. In this Torreón prevailed 1-0 against Irapuato.

Despite the additional play-offs (since 1970/71, the championship in Mexico has not been decided on the basis of the overall table, although all teams still play one home and one away game against all other teams in the league), this year too In the end, the sporting justice was enforced: as in the previous year (America), the team with the highest points of the entire season (Cruz Azul) had become champions and, as in the previous year (Atlas), the team with the lowest points (Irapuato) was relegated.
