Primera División (Mexico) 1970/71
The 1970/71 season was (after the "interposed" Torneo Mexico 70 , which was played in a similar way) the first regular season in Mexico in which the champions were not chosen based on the overall table. For the first time that season the championship was divided into two groups, although all teams in the league continued to compete against each other twice (one home and one away game). The two group winners (Toluca and América) faced each other at the end of the season in the final games for the championship and the two group bottom (Atlas and Pachuca) in the relegation games for relegation: America won the championship and Atlas was relegated.
Because the 1969/70 season and the Torneo Mexico 70, which was “pushed in” because of the 1970 World Cup , were played with only 16 teams each, but the league was expanded to 18 teams from the 1970/71 season, there were no relegated teams, but two promoted teams : Zacatepec and Puebla. Furthermore, the previous Club Oro was renamed Club Jalisco. In addition, the 1970/71 season was the last season in which Cruz Azul played its home games in Jasso , because before the start of the next season , the club moved to Mexico City. For more than a decade, Necaxa also played for the last time in the first division because the club had been acquired by a group of Spanish businessmen after the 1970/71 season and renamed Atlético Español; it was renamed Necaxa in 1982.

1: Because there was no winner after the first and second leg, a third game was necessary, which was played in León .
