Nolina beldingii is a species of the genus Nolina in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The epithet honors the American ornithologist Lyman Belding (1829–1917), the discoverer of the species. An English common name is "Belding's Nolina".

description

Nolina beldingii is tree-shaped with a height of 3 to 6 m. It forms numerous rosettes in the upper half of the trunk. The variable bluish to light green leaves are 50 to 100 cm long and 10 to 20 mm wide. The leaf margins are finely serrated.

The inflorescence becomes 1 to 2 m high with numerous long variable, ramifications. The white, cream-colored, rarely pink flowers are 2 mm long and in diameter. The flowering period extends from July to August.

The pressed capsule fruits , woody when ripe, are 5 to 10 mm long and in diameter. The brown, spherical to elongated seeds are 4 to 5 mm in diameter.

The species is frost hardy to minus 10 ° C. She is hardly known.

Distribution and systematics

Nolina beldingii is rare. It is distributed in Mexico in Baja California at altitudes of 300 to 1500 m and is associated with Yucca capensis .

Nolina beldingii is a member of the Arborescentes section . It is rarely endemic to the mountainous regions of the Cape region of Baja California. It is similar to Nolina nelsonii, however, differences in inflorescence and structure of the leaves become clear.

The first description was in 1890 by Townshend Stith Brandegee .
