Primera División (Mexico) 1951/52
The 1951/52 season was the ninth season of the highest Mexican professional football league introduced in 1943/44 .
Moved up and down
At the end of the previous season , for the first time ever, there had been a sporty promoter and relegation team. While the Club San Sebastián had to take the path to the second division , the newly promoted CD Zacatepec enriched the league and started the season on July 29, 1951 with an 8-0 home win against the later relegated CD Veracruz. It was also the highest victory that any team could achieve in this season.
At the end of the 1951/52 season, the CD Veracruz rose from the Segunda División and was replaced in the coming season by the promoted CF La Piedad .
Game rescheduled due to severe weather
At the end of August 1951, Mexico was hit by storms that resulted in two game cancellations. First of all, due to heavy rain over Mexico City , the meeting between Club America and Club León scheduled for August 22nd was not played until the next day. A few days later, the game between CD Tampico and Puebla FC, which was scheduled for August 25 , was postponed to October 3 due to a storm that swept across Tampico .
The title race
The final phase of the championship fight, in which León FC and CD Guadalajara fought an exciting head-to-head race for the title, was hard to beat in terms of drama. After 18 matchdays, Guadalajara led the table three points ahead of León, with León still one game behind. When Club León, who had been undefeated in their own place up until then, played a weak spot in their next home game against the bottomed-out CD Veracruz (0: 1), while Guadalajara simultaneously won 5: 3 against Marte, the fight for the title seemed to be decided prematurely. But in the following away game in the port city of Veracruz , Guadalajara also failed (0-2), which did not help Club León after its 1-1 draw against Puebla FC. Guadalajara was still ahead of Club León with 26-12 points with 30-10 points. On the penultimate game day there was a direct clash in Guadalajara , which the guest from León decided 1-0 in his favor and - after minus points - drew level with the CD Guadalajara. Guadalajara also lost their last game at Puebla FC (0-1) and thus remained the last three games of the season without scoring and without a point, but still kept the championship lead (with 30-14 points) ahead of Club León, the last Matchday in front of their own audience did not go beyond a 2-2 win against Necaxa. So the decision only brought a catch-up game that took place after the actual end of the season and is therefore no longer imaginable in this form today. León won this game 1-0 at Club Atlante and thus secured its third championship title since the introduction of the professional league, while the soon-to-be "series champion" CD Guadalajara had to wait a few years for his first title win.
