The 2010/11 season of the Primera División in Mexico began on Friday, July 23, 2010 with the encounter between the Club Estudiantes Tecos and the CD Cruz Azul, which the guests decided 3-0 in their favor.

CD Guadalajara started the season on Saturday, July 24th, with a home game against Puebla, which ended goalless and was also his last league game at the Estadio Jalisco (his farewell game at the Estadio Jalisco took place on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, in the semi-finals the Copa Libertadores against Universidad de Chile ). At the beginning of the second match day, the club moved to its newly built Estadio Omnilife, which would actually have seen a home game against CA Monarcas Morelia on the second match day. However, this game has been postponed to Wednesday 6 October 2010 as the new stadium was inaugurated on Friday 30 July with a game against Manchester United (3-2). It was also a farewell game for Chicharito , who moved from Guadalajara to Manchester. He played the first half for Guadalajara and the second for Manchester and scored the 1-0 lead for the hosts in the 8th minute, making himself the first goalscorer in the new stadium.

The last two games of the regular season took place on Sunday, May 1, 2011 and each ended with a 2-0 win for the away team (Morelia at Puebla and America at the Pumas).

Champion of Apertura 2010 (corresponds to the first half of the season) was Monterrey, champion of Clausura 2011 (second half of the season) was the UNAM Pumas. An interesting aspect is the fact that the Pumas failed in the semi-finals of the Apertura at the eventual champions Monterrey (0-0 and 0-2) and on the way to the championship in the Clausura in the quarter-finals against the same opponent (1-3 and 2) : 0) were able to prevail. Cruz Azul, the team with the highest points of the season, failed in the play-offs - in each case after a promising first leg result: in the quarter-finals of the Apertura the Cementeros lost 2-1 after a 2-1 away win at the UNAM Pumas in the second leg in front of their own audience; Cruz Azul lost a 2-0 lead from the first leg in the semi-finals of the Clausura when they lost 3-0 in the second leg in Morelia. The Monarcas Morelia had to deal exclusively with the three teams of the capital in the entire play-offs of the Clausura : in the quarterfinals they beat America 2-1 and 3-2, in the semifinals they eliminated Cruz Azul and in the final the Monarcas were defeated by the cougars with 1: 1 and 1: 2.

There were a total of 306 point games and 28 games in the Liguilla, the Spanish name for the play-offs, so a total of 334 games for the two championships.

In the regular round of points, each team had to play 34 games, 17 each in the Apertura and the Clausura. Theoretically, up to 46 games were possible for a team if they had reached the finals in both the Apertura and the Clausura. However, such a constellation did not occur in the 2010/11 season. Most of the games (44) were played by the UNAM Pumas, who advanced to the semi-finals in the Apertura and then won the Clausura.

The Club de Fútbol Indios , relegated in the previous year , was replaced by the promoted Necaxa. The traditional club, which is now based in Aguascalientes , was relegated at the end of the season and will be replaced by Club Tijuana in the 2011/12 season , which won the Liga de Ascenso in 2010/11 , bringing top division football to the border town of Tijuana for the first time .

    Jaguares de Chiapas - Santos Laguna 1: 2 1: 1 0: 1

Within eight years there was the fourth Clásico Chilango in the Liguilla , which the Pumas won for the third time in this period. In a tie of 4: 4, Monterrey prevailed against Pachuca (25) due to the more points scored in the league (32).

    CF Monterrey - UNAM Pumas 3: 3 3: 1 0: 2
    Club America - Monarcas Morelia 3: 5 1: 2 2: 3

The Pumas prevailed due to the more points scored in the league (35) against Monterrey (26), while America did not play its home game in the Aztec Stadium, but in the Estadio La Corregidora of Querétaro.

    Chivas Guadalajara - UNAM Pumas 1: 3 1: 1 0: 2
    Cruz Azul - Monarcas Morelia 2: 3 2-0 0: 3

With a double strike between the eighth and eleventh minute of the game, Rafael Márquez Lugo (not to be confused with the former defender of FC Barcelona !) Compensated for the seemingly comfortable lead of Cruz Azul from the first leg and thus laid the foundation for the progress of the Monarcas. Jaime Lozano's third goal would not have been necessary because the Monarcas would have prevailed against the Cementeros even if they were tied because of the more points scored in the league (31).

final total First leg Return leg
    Monarcas Morelia - UNAM Pumas 2: 3 1: 1 1: 2

The Monarcas had to compete with all three capital city clubs in this year's Liguilla. If they could still prevail against their arch rivals America and then Cruz Azul, they had to admit defeat to the Pumas.
