Primera División (Mexico) 2001/02

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2001/02 season of the Mexican soccer league MX was played this season for the last time with the terms " Invierno " for the preliminary round and " Verano " for the second round tournament and was given the names Apertura and Clausura, which are still used today , from the following 2002/03 season .

Changes

Because of the expansion of the league from 18 to 19 teams, there was no direct relegation. The actual relegated CF Atlante therefore got a second chance against the financially strongest second division club Tiburones Rojos Veracruz and was able to prevail with 0: 0 and 4: 1. During the winter break, the club from the port city of Veracruz was accepted into the first division by purchasing the CD Irapuato license . CF La Piedad , promoted at the beginning of the season, had the best points team in the second half of the season (Verano 2002) and thus qualified for the only time in its history for the Liguillas , in which the Reboceros were already defeated in the quarter-finals against the later champions Club America . Although they kept the sporting class, the Reboceros did not play first class in the following season after the license had been sold to Querétaro FC , whose team replaced the Reboceros.

Highest results

The highest-scoring game of the season took place on August 5, 2001 between Santos Laguna and La Piedad (6-4).

The biggest home victories of the season were a 6: 1 (Irapuato vs La Piedad on September 16, 2001) and a 5: 0 twice (Santos Laguna vs Monterrey also on September 16, 2001 and UNAM Pumas vs Celaya on July 29, 2001 ).

The biggest away victories were a 4-0 win by UANL Tigres at Necaxa on October 6, 2001 and Reboceros La Piedad at Atlético Celaya on April 27, 2002, as well as a 5-1 win three times. With this result, Atlético Celaya won the CF Atlas on November 10, 2001. Furthermore, both games between La Piedad and Cruz Azul ended with this result. In the first half of the season Cruz Azul won on October 14, 2001 with this result at La Piedad and in the second half of the match ended on March 23, 2002 with the same result in favor of the Reboceros.

Because the teams from Santos Laguna and Morelia, which only ended up in 3rd and 4th place in Group 2, scored more points (31 and 29, respectively) than four teams in the other groups that took second place (Cruz Azul, América and Tigres) and even won the group (Necaxa in group 3), a repechaje was necessary to determine whether they had participated in the quarter-finals. The teams with the better points, who only finished third and fourth in group 2, qualified for this, and the two runners-up with the worst goal difference had to take part, as all runners-up in groups 1, 3 and 4 each had 27 points.

After there was no winner in the North Mexican confrontation between Tigres (second in Group 4 with 27 points) and Santos Laguna (third in Group 2 with 31 points), the more points scored from the league round of the summer tournament (Verano) ultimately decided the Entry into the quarter-finals.

    Monarcas Morelia - UNAM Pumas 1: 4 1: 3 0: 1
    CF Atlas - Santos Laguna 3: 3 2: 1 1: 2

The leaders of the league round CF La Piedad, who had scored 37 points in the summer tournament (Verano 2002) and had to accept the fewest goals against (17) together with Deportivo Toluca FC, experienced a debacle against eventual champions America and was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Santos Laguna prevailed again in the event of a tie with the CF Atlas due to the more points scored (31 versus 30) in the league round.

The climax of the semi-finals was the Clásico Capitalino , the city derby between Club América and the Pumas de la UNAM. After the first leg in América's Aztec Stadium went goalless and the Pumas qualified for the final in a draw in the second leg at their home Estadio Olímpico Universitario because of the more points scored in the league round, the advantage was on their side. But an own goal by Miguel España put the guests in the lead after just 7 minutes and set the course in a different direction. The equalizer from Argentine striker Víctor Müller in the 43rd minute gave the Pumas another advantage in the half-time break. But Christian Patiño's goal in the 68th minute ultimately ensured the triumph of the Americanistas.

For the only time in the history of the Primera División there was a final pairing between Club América and their city rival Necaxa, who was still based in Mexico City in 2002 , and who also used the Aztec stadium as a permanent home ground as a second user.
