The 1955/56 season was the 13th season of the highest Mexican professional football league introduced in 1943/44 .

After only twelve teams had participated in the highest Mexican football league in the last five seasons (1950/51 to 1954/55), the league was increased to 14 teams for the 1955/56 season, bringing the number of participants from the 1949/50 season again was achieved when the top division had last carried the name Liga Mayor before it was renamed the Primera División in 1950/51 .
