Primera División (Mexico) 1980/81
The 1980/81 season was the 38th regular championship round in Mexico since the introduction of the Primera División in the 1943/44 season.
The relegated from the previous season , CSD Jalisco , was replaced by the promoted Atletas Campesinos.
As already practiced in the previous season, the competition was divided into 4 groups of 5 teams each. Regardless of this, each team in the league continued to play against each other twice (in one home and one away game). At the end of the league round, the top two teams in each group qualified for the final round, which was played in two groups of four teams each. The two group winners played the finals at the end of the season.
The two teams that had the fewest points during the entire season faced each other in a final. In these finals it was about staying in the House of Lords. Here Unión de Curtidores had more experience through the third participation in a row, but was subject to the team of Atlas Guadalajara and had to accept relegation to the second division .

1 The match between Puebla FC and CD Guadalajara was originally scheduled for February 15, 1981. On the way to the game, the guests' team bus got into a serious traffic accident in which some players were injured and the club's long-time midfielder José Martínez was killed. The match made up on March 29, 1981 ended 1: 1.
2 The match between the UNAM Pumas and CF Monterrey, played on April 16, 1981, was abandoned after only 43 minutes when the score was 2-0 for the hosts because there were only six players left on the pitch. The result at the time the game was abandoned was included in the rating.

For the second time in the history of the Primera División there was a Clásico Chilango , a derby between the capital clubs UNAM Pumas and Cruz Azul. While Cruz Azul prevailed two years earlier and was aiming for a second title hat trick this season (which the Cementeros had already won between 1972 and 1974), this time the team of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México retained the upper hand and won their second championship title.

Relegation round
The two teams with the fewest points played two relegation games at the end of the season to keep them up. Unión de Curtidores had to participate for the third time in a row.
