Emil Zschimmer (born September 14, 1842 in Großwig , † January 23, 1917 in Schmiedeberg ) was a German painter and art teacher.

Life

Zschimmer was born as the son of the manor owner Johann August Zschimmer and his wife Auguste Henriette nee. Baentsch born. After primary school, Zschimmer attended the orphanage secondary school in Halle from 1853 to 1859 . Then he trained as a pattern maker in a calico factory in Eilenburg until 1863 . Subsequently, until 1872, Zschimmer began studying at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar with Arthur von Ramberg , Ferdinand Pauwels and Alexander Michelis . His studies were interrupted by his military service in the 4th  Jäger Battalion in Sangerhausen and his participation in the Franco-German War 1870–71.

Zschimmer achieved his first artistic success in 1872 when his picture “Im Hochwalde” was awarded a prize at a show at the Academic Art Exhibition in Berlin. In 1875 Zschimmer got a job as a teacher at the Princely Free Drawing School in Weimar . From 1882 to 1891 he worked as a teacher for freehand drawing at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar. During these years he also worked as a teacher at the Royal High School in Erfurt . In 1890 Zschimmer was awarded the title of professor.

In the following year Zschimmer gave up his teaching post and retired to Bad Schmiedeberg in his newly built villa. Hundreds of views of the Düben Heath were created here , most of which are now privately owned, but also in museums. In addition to painting, he occasionally worked as a carver. Zschimmer's two sons died in World War I. He was considered " the " painter of the Düben Heath. Zschimmer was buried in the cemetery in Bad Schmiedeberg, where his grave is still being cared for. A street in Bad Schmiedeberg has been named in his honor since 1990.
