Associated with this prize was a generous scholarship, which enabled Pauwels to study at the Villa Medici in Rome until 1856 . On his return trip in 1856, Pauwels stayed in Dresden for some time before settling in Antwerp as a freelance artist.

In 1862 Pauwels accepted a professorship at the Grand Ducal Art School Weimar, which had been founded two years earlier, and taught numerous students there for ten years with great success, including Max Liebermann . At the same time, many of his oil paintings , but also his well-known "Luther cycle" on the Wartburg , seven murals from the life of Martin Luther , were created during this time . The other paintings in the 18-picture cycle were created by Paul Thumann (5), Willem Linnig the Elder. J. (3) and Alexander Struys (3).

In 1872 Pauwels returned to Belgium and worked freelance for the next four years. In 1876 he was appointed to the art academy in Dresden , where he again did his teaching job as a professor. During this time he also created a group of six wall paintings in the auditorium of the Princely School of Meissen. Pauwels died in Dresden in 1904 and was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery.

reception

Audiences and critics alike admired the skillful implementation of the historical themes. While there were still biblical scenes in Pauwels early works (“Deborah as a judge”), this changed over the years up to political statements (“America abolishes slavery”). In addition to the content of his works, his play with colors was also praised. Pauwels was able to complete the cycle of twelve wall paintings begun by Charles de Groux in the Cloth Hall in Ypres .
