Paul Rudolf Heinrich Poetzsch (* 8. November 1858 in Dresden , † 24. February 1936 ibid ) was a German painter and draftsman. From 1915 to 1918 he was the Royal Councilor of Saxony .

Life

Paul Poetzsch was born as the ninth child of Rittmeister Gottfried Heinrich Poetzsch and Gisela Amalie Wilhelmine, nee. Leykamm was born in Dresden and initially had a carefree childhood, which was overshadowed by the early death of his mother in 1866 and one of his sisters in 1868. From 1877 to 1884 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Leon Pohle and from 1885 to 1886 he was a master student of Ferdinand Pauwels . During his training he received all the medals attainable at the academy and took part in public exhibitions. In 1884 he was one of the bearers of Ludwig Richter's coffin .

His painting “The Danaids” received the Prix de Rome in 1886 ; The associated scholarship of 2,400 marks annually enabled him to go on a study trip to Italy from 1887 to 1889, which took him to Venice , Milan , Rome , Naples and Torre del Greco . After he had to refuse a teaching post after his return due to a nervous stomach ailment, he opened a painting school in 1890 and worked as a freelance artist.

In 1889 he won a competition to design the auditorium of the council school in Dresden-Altstadt . In 1892 he married Frederike Sandvoss, with whom he had four children. In 1915 he received from the Saxon King Friedrich August III. the title of "Royal Councilor" and was a member of the Dresden Artists 'Cooperative and the General German Artists' Cooperative . He remained artistically active in Dresden until the end of his life. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, a representative exhibition of his works took place in Dresden in 1933.

In his honor, his house on Zeunerstraße in Dresden-Räcknitz is now called "Paul-Poetzsch-Haus", where his estate is kept.

art

Poetzsch painted portraits , interiors , genre scenes, urban and village views and again and again landscapes . In order to earn money, he also made copies of old masters , which impress with their faithful reproduction of the original. From today's perspective, his mostly small-format oil sketches stand out, applied lightly to cardboard, wood or canvas. He used various techniques for his pictures, from pastel , watercolor and oil painting to wall painting and painted miniature small formats as well as large-scale wall paintings.
