Augusta Maria of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (* 6. February 1649 at Schloss Gottorf ; † 24 / 25. April 1728 ) was by birth Princess of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf and by marriage Margravine of Baden-Durlach .

Life

Augusta Maria was the youngest daughter of Duke Friedrich III. von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (1597–1659) and his wife Maria Elisabeth of Saxony (1610–1684), daughter of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony and Magdalena Sibylle of Prussia . Her older sister Hedwig Eleonora had been Queen of Sweden since 1654 and her older brother Christian Albrecht succeeded her father in 1659, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf.

On May 15, 1670 she married Friedrich VII. Magnus von Baden-Durlach , son of Margrave Friedrich VI in Husum . von Baden-Durlach and Christina Magdalena von Kleeberg. After the death of his father on 10./31. January 1677 her husband became Margrave of Baden-Durlach. Augusta Maria thus became Margravine of Baden-Durlach.

Due to pressure from King Louis XIV of France, her husband took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . In 1688, Margrave Friedrich and his family were driven out of the country and went to Basel. Only after the Peace of Rijswijk in 1697 did they return to Durlach in the impoverished margravate, whose population was reduced by a quarter. The War of the Spanish Succession , which began in 1701, also took place in part in the margraviate of Baden-Durlach. The margrave and margravine fled to Basel again. The margrave died there in 1709. After the end of the war in 1714, Augusta Maria returned to Durlach.

She was buried in the Castle Church of St. Michael in Pforzheim.
