Roberto Simonazzi

Roberto Simonazzi (* 1963 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) is a former German athlete and sports therapist .

Life and athletic career

Roberto Simonazzi was born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1963. He attended high school up to high school and then studied sports science at the Sport University in Cologne . He completed his studies with a diploma. At the age of 18 he suffered a serious accident in which he lost a leg (thigh amputation).

With his achievements in the disciplines of discus , shot put , javelin and pentathlon , Simonazzi was appointed to the German national disabled athletics team. With this team he took part in a total of five Paralympic Games from 1984 to 2000 . At his first Paralympic Summer Games he did not win a medal (5th place in the javelin throw), but in 1988 he got into the medal ranks. He became Olympic champion in the shot put and won a silver medal in the javelin throw and in the discus. In 1992 in Barcelona he won a gold medal in the pentathlon and also a bronze medal in the discuswurt. Another bronze medal, this time in the javelin, he won in Atlanta in 1996 , while in Sydney in 2000 he only achieved a 5th place in the pentathlon and a 6th place There was enough space in the shot put.

For winning a medal at the 1992 Paralympic Summer Games in Barcelona , Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker awarded him the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993 .
