Roberto Yáñez Betancourt y Honecker (born October 10, 1974 in East Berlin ) is a German - Chilean painter , poet and songwriter .

Yáñez grew up as the son of Sonja Honecker, the daughter of Erich and Margot Honecker , and the Chilean dissident Leonardo Yáñez Betancourt in East Berlin and had two younger sisters, the older of whom died early. In East Berlin he attended the polytechnic high school " Reinhold Huhn " in Berlin-Mitte from 1981 to 1989 . In March 1990 he emigrated to Chile with his parents and settled in Santiago de Chile . In 1992 his parents separated.

After graduating from the German School Abroad in Santiago de Chile in 1993 , he worked as an artist. He lived in a hippie colony in the Atacama Desert , wrote poetry and painted. In 1994, he was treated in a clinic in Cuba against the consequences of his simultaneous drug use . In addition to his artistic activities, he kept afloat as a waiter, library assistant, street musician and translator, among other things. During this time he was supported by his grandmother Margot Honecker, in whose house he mostly lived.

In 1999 he published his first volume of poetry. Two further volumes of poetry followed in Chile by 2011. Yáñez is a member of the surrealist group Derrame . From 2000 to 2002 he lived in Cuba. He then took part in various surrealist events in Spain , Portugal and Chile with texts and images . He lives in Chile.

In 2013 he visited the reunified Germany for the first time on the occasion of an exhibition of his pictures entitled Metamorphoses: Roberto Yáñez in the Kornfeld gallery in Berlin .
