Lothar Herzog (bodyguard)

Lothar Herzog (* 1943 in Lichtenstein , Saxony ) is the former waiters , servants and bodyguards Erich Honecker . He worked for the former GDR head of state for twelve years . With his book about the private side of Honecker, which appeared in 2012, he reached the top ten of the Spiegel bestseller list.

Life

Lothar Herzog was founded in 1943 as the son of a bismuth - pals born and grew up in Chemnitz. From 1958 to 1961 he did an apprenticeship as a waiter at the Hotel Chemnitzer Hof , after which he went to Berlin and joined the Ministry for State Security as a bodyguard . There he held the rank of captain of the MfS; at the same time, Herzog was a member of the SED . From January 1962 to February 1985 he worked as a waiter and steward in the Waldsiedlung Wandlitz , where Erich and Margot Honecker and other members of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED lived and had a clubhouse , a doctor's office , swimming pool , sauna , restaurant and a sports field with tennis facilities decreed. With Erich Honecker he made state visits to more than 30 countries.

Herzog's duties also included accompanying Politburo members and government representatives on trips abroad. From 1971 to 1984, Herzog was responsible for Erich Honecker together with Bernd Brückner. The activity also included Honecker's vacation time. After retiring from personal security , Herzog worked, among other things, as a head waiter in the Palace of the Republic , after which he worked at the International Congress Center in Berlin-Westend until he retired in 2005 .
