Robin Bargar

Robin L. Bargar (* 1959 in Ohio ) is an American electronic music composer, filmmaker and scientist who conducts research in the field of media and information technology.

Life

As early as the 1980s, Bargar experimented with the computer as a new medium and began to develop his own programs. He studied music composition in the field of electronic music and music technology at Ohio State University until 1985 and then received his PhD in computer music from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995 . During his time at college and high school, Bargar created various works of art on the computer, including the Tokyo-winning graphics Venus and Milo and The Listener, as well as the 1991 electro-acoustic piece of music Business as Usual . Bargar also worked on the experimental short film The End (1995), which he wrote and produced with Chris Landreth . He was also responsible for music and sound. In 1996, Bargar and Landreth were nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Short Film category.

Bargar worked at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois from 1993 to 2000 , where he co-founded the Audio Development Group. Among other things, he worked on the development of software that generates synthetic noises for virtual worlds . At the same time, he was head of the Integrated Systems Laboratory of the Beckman Institute of Advanced Science and Technology, also at the University of Illinois, from 1997 to 1999.

From 2000 Bargar worked at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was a consulting technical program manager at E-mu Systems / Creative Labs . From 2002 he worked as CEO of the non-profit organization Hexagram in Montreal , which was committed to the research and production of art and media technologies and wanted to combine art and industry.

Bargar was Dean of the School of Technology and Design at the City University of New York from 2004 to 2011 and then from 2011 to 2015 Dean of the School of Media Arts at Columbia College Chicago . Since 2015, Bargar has been Executive Director of the Salford International Innovation Studio (SIIS) at the School of Arts and Media at the University of Salford in Manchester .

Bargar is considered an expert in the development and further development of software that generates images and sound in virtual reality and computer animation. He has been married to scientist Insook Choi since 1987.
